Sapphire is the term used to describe all varieties of the mineral Corundum excluding the red variety denoted Ruby since antiquity. Sapphire is an aluminum oxide with a hardness of 9. The only other mineral harder than Sapphire is Diamond. Sapphire is considered one of the Four Precious Gemstones. It can be found in metamorphic and igneous environments as well as alluvial deposits. The crystal system of Sapphire is hexagonal. The spectrum of colors Sapphire displays includes many shades of blue, violet, pink, white, green, black, yellow, and orange. In the gem trade, the term Sapphire with no prefix is considered the blue variety of Corundum also known as Kashmir Sapphire or Cornflower Blue Sapphire. Any other Sapphire other than blue is often referred to as “Fancy”. The blue pigment of Corundum is caused by inclusions of Iron and Titanium; the violet pigment is caused by Vanadium; the yellow or green pigment is caused by low levels of Iron; and the pink pigment is caused by the presence of Chrome. The presence of fine Rutile inclusions creates a star-like effect known as Asterism and is seen in highly valued Star Sapphires. An orange-pink variety called Padparadsha Sapphire has become increasingly desired and highly prized in today’s gem market, with a value sometimes greater than blue Sapphires. Sapphire is pleochroic, displaying varying colors when viewed from different axes, and sometimes color zoned, owing to Sapphire’s occasional color differences seen displayed in a single crystal. Color-changing Sapphires also exist. Fine Sapphire specimens have been found in India, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Thailand, Madagascar, Tanzania, Pakistan, Afghanistan, East Africa, the United States (Montana), and Australia. Australia is considered the world’s most abundant source of Sapphires today. The Verneuil Process describes the synthesis of the first lab created Sapphire in 1902 and only experts can tell the difference from natural or lab created Sapphires. Sapphires have been used and venerated throughout generations.
