Handmade Sterling Silver Apple Peel Necklace by Mary Van der Aa
One of the many things that we love about Mary van der Aa is her utilization of really cool jewelry making techniques! This apple peel necklace was created using an old Danish technique from the early 1900’s called depletion gilding. Depletion gilding is where when she heats up the sterling silver, the copper alloy part of the sterling silver is depleted when the metal is pickled, leaving the piece of jewelry as mostly fine silver. This gives the cool, frosted look on the surface of the pendant and the piece doesn’t tarnish as easily. Because it’s mostly silver, we do not suggest cleaning this piece with traditional jewelry cleaner, but with actual silver polish.
