What’s the difference between a stalagmite and a stalactite? The stalagmite with a G grows from the ground while a stalactite with a C grows from the ceiling! Stalactites and stalagmites are elongated forms of various minerals deposited from solution by slowly dripping water. The surface tension of the drops of mineral rich water cause these crazy things to form in tubes of calcite.
